‘Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self to the self’ Bhagavad Gita

A Little bit about Yoga…..

Yoga is an ancient body of knowledge dating back over 500 years.  The work comes the Sanskrit root ‘yug’ meaning union or to unite.  Yoga is the union of the mind, the body and the spirit to bring balance and harmony into our lives and all levels of our being.  The ancient yogis formulated a way to achieve and maintain this harmony through exercise. breathing, relaxation and meditation.

Each yoga session offers a combination of postures (asanas), relaxation, meditation and breathing (pranayama).  Yoga practice will lengthen, tone and stretch the body whilst energizing and helping to calm and de-stress.  It is also a way of life.  Yoga is an individual path for everyone who undertakes it - no two people are the same and no two practices are alike.

In our 21st century world where the pace of life seems more hectic yoga provides us with the ‘tools’ to cope with the challenges of daily life.  It helps promote a healthier more fulfilled life and it can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere with only a mat, a blanket and loose comfortable clothing. It can be practised by Every Body to help to improve our general well-being and discover the health benefits for ourselves.  We can use the postures to improve balance and circulation, strengthen the back and legs, mobilise the joints and spine, open the chest and the heart.

Each posture (asana) is a feeling of a journey, a flowing body and always focusing on the breath.

When Pablo Casals was asked why he continued to practice yoga at age 93 he said

‘Because I am finally beginning to notice some improvement!!’

A little bit about your teachers..……

Yoga is a part of us and a part of our lives, teaching from the heart emphasising a working towards a posture – a feeling of a journey rather than the posture itself.

Both Jean and Maggie hold the British Wheel of Yoga Teaching Diploma and have been practicing yoga for many years.

They have both had the privilege of studying under some internationally renowned teachers which has helped to deepen personal practise and knowledge of yoga and its teachings.  They both feel that they are constantly learning and consequently consider themselves still students too!!

Maggie relocated to Cyprus in November 2004 and began teaching regular classes here and has a studio close by.  She also teaches for the British bases of Dhekelia and Ayios Nicholaos.

Jean Davies is a very experienced teacher based in both Clacton on Sea in the UK and Cyprus.  She is a remedial teacher offering specialist classes for Parkinson’s and older students.  She believes in the power of yoga nidra, pranayama and a gentle approach to asana practice.  Her gentle and patient approach endears her to all students.  She is also a qualified Reflexologist and Reiki practitioner.
